Senior Care Carrollwood, FL: Seniors and Air Conditioning

Over the last decade spring and summer temperatures have been rising all over the country. Experts say that extreme heat is here to stay, and that’s something that seniors and their families need to take seriously. Every year thousands of seniors die from heat related illnesses. When seniors are aging in place in older homes that don’t have air conditioning they might struggle to keep cool during the newly hot summers. Before the really hot weather arrives you should consider these air conditioning options for your senior loved one who is aging in place and talk about what option will work best for your senior loved one:

Central Air

Having central air conditioning installed is the best option if your senior loved one’s home has the capacity for central air. Central air is quiet, efficient, and will keep the entire house at a very comfortable temperature. But, not every house is designed in such a way that installing central air is possible. Make an appointment to have an HVAC technician  come out to your senior loved one’s  home to assess the home and give you an estimate for the installation of central air. If you can’t be there for the estimate a senior home care provider can take all the information and give it you later on.

Mini Splits

Ductless mini splits are idea for homes that don’t have the right duct work for central air conditioning. These small units are installed into the walls of the home and can be very effective at cooling small spaces. If your senior loved ones have a small home or a one level home mini splits might be a better option than central air for your senior loved ones. Mini splits can also be installed in just one room if your senior loved ones really just need air conditioning in a bedroom or in the living room.

Ceiling Fans And House Fans

If your senior loved one’s home just needs better air circulation and flow installing a whole house fan or a series of ceiling fans through the house can help make the temperature a lot more comfortable in the hot weather. Ceiling fans are energy efficient and can help keep air circulating throughout the home 24/7. Just make sure that the fans are installed high enough that they won’t be a safety risk for your senior loved one.

One Floor Living

Another option for keeping your senior loved ones cool this summer is to have them move down to the first floor. Creating a first floor primary suite can allow your senior parents to close off the upper floors of the house where the heat can be quite bad in the summer. With the help of a senior home care provider you senior loved ones can live comfortably on the first floor of the home. Heat rises so the first floor should stay much cooler than the rest of the home throughout the hot summer months.
